Panther Talk – Student Stories of Gratitude
As we gather around the table this Thanksgiving, we’re taking a moment to celebrate the incredible stories of our Georgia State University students. Each Panther’s journey is unique, marked by resilience, discovery, and gratitude for the experiences that shape their future. From uncovering new passions to thriving in our urban campus, these students remind us what it means to grow and succeed as part of the Panther family.
Let their inspiring stories show you why GSU is more than a university—it’s a place to find your path, your people, and your purpose! 💙
Joeeta Joee
Joeeta Joee chose public health because it combines her interests in STEM and healthcare, and she loves how the field impacts our daily lives. As President of the Undergraduate Public Health Club, Joee connects students with networking and volunteer opportunities.
Her favorite class? “Collective Health, Race and Culture in Bahia, Brazil,” where she got to study abroad and compare Brazil’s healthcare system with the U.S. while diving into the rich culture and history.
Her favorite spot on campus? The fifth floor of the library—perfect for quiet study time between classes, a hallmark of GSU’s commitment to creating spaces for focused learning!
Her advice for incoming students? “Be brave and take every opportunity that comes your way—it’ll help you grow personally and professionally!”
With plans to pursue a career in public health policy, Joee is a shining example of how GSU can empower students to turn their passions into impactful careers.
Maysa Osman
Meet Maysa Osman, a passionate Public Health major and Vice President of the Undergraduate Public Health Club, who plans to tackle health disparities worldwide! Maysa’s dream is to become an epidemiologist, researching diseases in underserved populations and finding simple, impactful prevention strategies.
On campus, Maysa shines as a leader and is an active member of the Meta Series Committee, helping connect students, faculty, and public health professionals. She also writes for The Signal, sharing her unique take on global and local issues.
Her favorite GSU class? “Program Evaluation and Implementation” with Dr. Armstrong-Mensah, where she got hands-on experience applying public health skills in her community.
Her advice to incoming Panthers? “Network as much as you can! Connections are key in public health.” With her dedication to global health, Maysa is ready to make a lasting impact—starting at GSU.
Arly Cruz-Aboytes
Arly Cruz-Aboytes, a first-generation college student, combines her passions for education and psychology in Georgia State’s B.I.S. in Human Learning and Development program. For Arly, GSU offered something unique: “The diversity of classes allowed me to curate a bachelor’s degree that was personalized. It was something that other universities could not offer me.”
Arly is especially grateful for her Professor Namisi Chilungu’s seminar on educational psychology. “It was more than class; it was a learning community,” she shared. The close-knit environment fostered laughter, thought-provoking discussions, and a sense of belonging.
Her hard work and perseverance earned her the 2024 Outstanding B.I.S in Human Learning and Development Student Award. She credits her program director, Clinical Associate Professor Omer Ari, for encouraging her to apply, showcasing how GSU faculty go above and beyond to help students achieve their goals.
Tiffany Parker
Tiffany Parker’s journey at Georgia State University began with nursing, but it was the university’s vibrant athletic culture that helped her discover her true calling. After attending several football and basketball games, Tiffany realized her passion for the energy and teamwork behind athletics. “Being able to see the culture and values of the work behind athletics helped me decide this career path was for me,” she shared.
Switching her major to sport administration was a defining moment, and one that many students might experience upon starting college. One of her most memorable experiences came at a Women in Sports and Events networking event, where she met her mentor and gained valuable insight into the industry. “It became a safe space for me to talk about my concerns and how I feel about entering sport business,” she said.
Tiffany Parker’s journey serves as an example of how Georgia State University’s diverse programs and extracurriculars encourage students to discover their path. Her passion for sport administration and dedication earned her the 2024 Outstanding Sport Administration Undergraduate Student Award, a recognition she proudly shares with the Panther community!
