Admission for Transfer Students into Georgia State
If you’re already in college but need a change, transferring to Georgia State can provide you with the opportunities you need to succeed — in school and after graduation.
Note: If you are enrolled in an associate degree pathway at Georgia State’s Perimeter College and wish to transition to the Atlanta Campus for a bachelor’s degree program, follow our instructions for Transition Students.

Complete the Georgia State Application for Admission accompanied by a $60 non-refundable fee. You can use a credit card or authorize a draft from a checking account.

We’ll need your official transcripts from every college or university you’ve attended. Schools may send them to us electronically through an approved transcript company at [email protected] or mail them to us here:

General Admissions Information
Transfer Requirements
- Have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 for all college-level coursework attempted at previously attended regionally accredited institutions. (Excludes developmental and remedial classes.)
- Have completed 30 semester credit hours or 45 quarter credit hours of college-level coursework. If you haven’t completed the credit hours requirement, you must meet all first-year requirements AND submit one of the following:
- Official high school transcript showing a 3.4 or higher core GPA OR
- Test scores sent electronically for the SAT or ACT (or both, if you so choose)

- Be eligible to re-enroll at the last institution you attended.
- Have completed all Required High School Curriculum units and Learning Support coursework required by any previously attended University System of Georgia school.
Note: Admission to Georgia State is a selective process. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee acceptance.
Establishing Georgia Residency
- You or your parent(s) must have lived in Georgia for at least 12 consecutive months immediately before your enrollment at a college or university.
- If you entered Georgia to attend an educational institution, your time in school is not normally counted toward the 12-month residence requirement.
- Your “legal residence” is your permanent home.
- You must not only live in Georgia but also intend to remain in Georgia indefinitely.

Transfer Credit Guidelines
- Check course credit equivalencies using our new Transfer Credit Predictor at Georgia State Degree Transfer*.
- Development, vocational and occupational courses are not acceptable for transfer credit.
- You can apply no more than 12 semester credit hours of D grades — whether as resident credit (completed at Georgia State) or transfer credit — toward your degree requirements. No credit will be awarded for a course completed at a foreign institution with a grade that is equivalent to a D in the U.S.
- To be acceptable for transfer credit, English composition courses must have been completed with a grade of C or higher.
- Additional restrictions for transferring D grades may be included in certain degree programs.
- Courses completed at two-year colleges are typically awarded lower-division credit.
- You can earn no more than 30 total semester hours by extension or correspondence.
- Georgia State does not grant credit for college-level General Educational Development tests or courses completed at the United States Armed Forces Institute or any U.S. armed forces service school, except for military academies.
Academic Residence Requirement
To earn a bachelor’s degree from Georgia State, you have to satisfy our academic residence requirements:
- Earn 39 credit hours at Georgia State for courses numbered 3000 or higher with a grade point average of at least 2.0.
- Complete one-half of the courses that constitute your major or 11 credit hours in the major, whichever is less, at Georgia State.
Note: You cannot use credit by examination, credit by validation, credit earned through College Level Examination Program tests or Advanced Placement courses, or credit for courses specifically excluded by university policy to meet the academic residence requirement.
