Nursing, LPN to BSN Bridge Program
Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions
The Georgia State University LPN to BSN Bridge Program is designed for the working licensed practical nurse or licensed vocational nurse wanting to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. In our busy, fast-paced society, it can be challenging to balance work, school and family responsibilities. The combination of online and face-to-face classes allows flexibility and supports student success. Clinical rotations in acute care and community-based agencies allow students to build competence and clinical judgment skills in real-world settings.
Graduates of the program are eligible to take the NCLEX examination for Registered Nurses. To apply for the program, students must apply and be admitted to Georgia State Perimeter College. Admission to the program is once per year in the summer.
Nursing, R.N. to B.S.N.

Beginning Fall semester 2022, Georgia State’s R.N. to B.S.N. program joins a collaborative academic agreement, which allows our program to deliver certain courses common to the R.N. to B.S.N. program of study with other nursing programs in the University System of Georgia. Bachelor’s prepared nurses are in high demand as hospitals and healthcare organizations try to address the current nursing shortage. Earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing will provide you with a competitive advantage through advanced training that will broaden your career options in leadership and specialty positions as well as prepare you to move into graduate level work.
Georgia State’s online R.N. to B.S.N. degree completion program is designed for practicing registered nurses with an associate degree in nursing or a nursing diploma. In just three semesters you can complete your core nursing curriculum and receive your bachelor of science in nursing. Flexible pathways consisting of less than nine credit hours per semester are also available to help you balance competing demands. The program prepares nurses at an advanced level to meet the challenges of today’s complex healthcare environment.
Georgia State’s School of Nursing is the only one in Georgia that offers the full spectrum of nursing education, from associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees with six of these programs available online. Nutrition, B.S.
Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions
The Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions offers a bachelor of science degree in Nutrition with concentrations in Nutrition Science and Nutrition and Wellness.
The Nutrition Science concentration provides a strong foundation for those interested in positions in applied sciences or for those pursuing pre-professional (medical, dental, occupational therapy, speech pathology and dietetics) studies. After completing the core requirements, students take courses in physiology and nutrition (required for the major) and may take additional courses in nutrition, biology, biochemistry, chemistry and physics (electives). Students interested in eventually pursuing Georgia State’s Coordinated Program, which prepares students to become registered dietitian nutritionists, should choose the Nutrition Science concentration.
The Nutrition and Wellness concentration prepares students for entry-level careers in the nutrition, health and wellness fields. After completing the core requirements, students take courses in nutrition and gerontology (required for the major), and may take additional courses in nutrition, psychology, sociology or other approved areas (electives). This program provides students with a well-rounded understanding of the health and nutrition needs of the public over the lifespan and equips students with health communication skills. These skills and this knowledge will help prepare students for positions in nutrition and wellness promotion in government agencies and private industries.

Philosophy Pathway, A.A.

What Is Philosophy?
Philosophy is the study of ideas, such as those about knowledge, truth and the meaning of life. It encourages students to challenge, defend and develop a tolerance for ideas.
Why Study Philosophy?
Studying philosophy at Georgia State enhances problem-solving capacities, persuasive powers and the ability to understand and express ideas. The study of philosophy provides a valuable preparation for students planning to pursue professional careers such as law, medicine and theology.

Philosophy, B.A.
Philosophy teaches a person how to think critically and creatively, how to write clearly and persuasively, and other skills valuable to a wide range of careers, including law, business, the sciences and education.
The Department of Philosophy has three areas of strength:
- Social, Legal, and Political Philosophy
- Philosophy of Mind, Cognitive Science, and Neurophilosophy
- The History of Philosophy
The department also offers a series of courses in applied ethics, which provides students useful skills for their careers and their lives. Courses in this area include Introduction to Ethics, Sex and Love, Race and Racism, Biomedical Ethics, Philosophy of Law, Business Ethics, and our signature experience course in which students prepare to compete in the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl.
Philosophy, B.A., Pre-Law Concentration
The study of philosophy is excellent preparation for law school and a career in law. The critical thinking skills, clarity in writing and argumentative rigor required in philosophy provide students with the tools they need to be successful in law school and as lawyers. Philosophy majors have among the highest average scores on the LSAT and the highest admission rates to law school of any major.
The Department of Philosophy at Georgia State includes seven nationally recognized scholars in legal and political philosophy.
Students in the philosophy/pre-law track can also learn about pre-law opportunities at the university by joining the Pre-Law Society and other student groups on campus. Students can also join the pre-law GroupMe for the Center for the Advancement of Students and Alumni, which provides access to the university’s centralized pre-law advising program.
Philosophy, Politics and Economics, B.I.S.
Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, College of Arts & Sciences
Georgia State’s Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) Bachelors of Interdisciplinary Studies (B.I.s.) helps students become familiar with and capable of contributing to ongoing debates about the nature of good political and economic institutions, as well as the policies and practices that are best suited for creating and sustaining them. Students will develop the intellectual skills of the social scientist, who seeks to understand how the social world operates, and the moral philosopher, who seeks to critically evaluate the social world in relation to how it ought to be.
This interdisciplinary program makes use of the analytically rigorous tools of its three disciplines to promote serious thought about practical issues, allowing students to delve deep into moral, social, political and economic issues. This program is great for pre-law students preparing for law school and a career in law.
PPE graduates contribute intelligently to public dialogue, many in positions of power in government and corporate life. The PPE program supports the Civil Discourse Forum, a student group that encourages discussion of controversial issues and is often led by PPE students.

Photography, B.F.A.
The undergrad photography program provides a critical and conceptual grounding for students as they independently pursue their studio practice. The weekly seminar serves as the backbone of the program. Critical theory is stressed while critique forms the basis for dialogue about ongoing work. Students are encouraged to look beyond established photographic conventions and to push their work in new directions. Creative investigation across disciplines is avidly supported and results in students working in mixed media, video, digital, installation, performance and conventional photographic print media. Guest critics and guest artists are invited to final critiques to supplement the expertise of the faculty.
Physics Pathway, A.S.
What Is Physics?
Physics is the exploration, identification and study of basic principles and laws governing motion, energy, structure and the intersection of matter. These include the unseen forces of gravity, electric and magnetic forces. Physics examines these laws and their influences on society and the world.
Why study Physics?
Physics helps you understand the world around you. Georgia State Perimeter College physics classes teach you how the laws of physics answer practical questions:
- What causes you to lose control of your car on a wet road?
- How does air pressure affect the bounce of a basketball?
- How do microwaves cook food?
- Why are the peanuts always near the bottom of the Cracker Jack box?
Physicists use testing and research to develop technology and improvements for society, including alternate energy options, medical equipment such as the MRI and high-resolution telescopes such as the Hubble.
At Perimeter College, you can take Physics courses on all five campuses. All Physics lecture courses (not laboratory courses) required for the Physics Pathway also are offered online.

What Is Political Science?
Political Science is a study of human behavior that examines data and political systems, institutions and behaviors. It encompasses multiple perspectives and uses a mixture of methods. Aristotle believed the study of politics was essential to achieving a stable and orderly society. The study of political science helps build a society that develops, advances and improves our lives.
Why Study Political Science?
The Political Science guided pathway at Perimeter College leads to an associate of arts degree and provides the first two years of division requirements for a bachelor’s degree in political science.

Political Science, B.A./M.A.
The Georgia State University Department of Political Science offers a B.A./M.A. program that allows students to save time and tuition money by earning both degrees in as little as five years.
This dual degree opportunity enables qualified students to enroll in graduate courses late in their undergraduate program and apply the coursework toward both the bachelor’s and master’s programs.
Political science is the study of “who gets what, when and how” in the distribution of goods and values in society and in groups. Political scientists study the forces that determine such distributions, including political parties and voters, public opinion, interest groups, bureaucracies and administrative behavior, public law, international relations, international law and organizations, national security, intergovernmental relations, political behavior, political philosophy, comparative politics, public policy and conflict.
At the undergraduate level, students may specialize in any of the five fields of the discipline:
- American politics and government
- Comparative politics
- International politics
- Political theory, or
- Public policy and administration
At the graduate level, students can choose from four concentrations:
- General Political Science

Population Health Sciences Concentration, Public Health, B.S.
School of Public Health
Georgia State University’s Bachelor of Science in Public Health with a concentration in Population Health Sciences provides foundational knowledge and skills that enable students to collect and analyze data on the social, behavioral, biological and environmental factors that influence human health. The concentration helps students turn data into action by strengthening their ability to advocate for the protection and promotion of the public’s health at all levels of society, think critically and creatively, make ethical and evidence-based decisions, and understand the cultural contexts in which public health professionals work.
The Population Health Sciences concentration draws on a variety of disciplines such as math, the social, behavioral, and biological sciences, and chemistry to explore a range of health-related topics. The concentration prepares students for entry level careers in biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health, public health emergency preparedness and response, and workplace safety and health, among others. The Population Health Sciences concentration also provides a strong foundation for graduate education and an accelerated path to earning a Master of Public Health degree in just one additional year through the 4+1 BS/MPH program. A dedicated pre-med track includes the pre-requisite courses students need to apply to medical school.

The Undergraduate Certificate in Professional Sales is designed to provide you with a solid foundation in the fundamentals of selling. During the program, you will build knowledge and develop skills to help you be successful in actual sales situations. You will complete hands-on assignments in presentations, sales scenarios, and collegiate sales contests. The instructors are prominent research faculty in the science and art of selling and are also successful practitioners with real-world experience.

Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Rooted in science and philosophy, it examines a variety of topics, including individual and interpersonal behavior, thinking, problem-solving, motivations and emotions.
Why Study Psychology?
Psychology can increase understanding of oneself and others in a variety of contexts and has many applications to people’s daily lives. Much of life entails developing and maintaining relationships, whether with coworkers, managers, customers, patients, students, teachers, parents, partners, spouses or children. Psychology provides a foundation for students to understand themselves and people’s interactions with them.

Psychology, B.A. or B.S.
College of Arts & Sciences
Georgia State’s psychology degree introduces you to the study of the mind and behavior. Our classes will have you applying the concepts you’re studying to clinical, industrial, community and other social contexts, while increasing your understanding of behavior and the formation of relationships.
The program offers students the option of a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree. Both options will have you studying the theories and basic research methods in the industry and will make you a better communicator and listener. The B.S. option requires more STEM-related coursework in science and math and graduates tend to focus on the clinical applications of the degree in their jobs or graduate school attendance. The B.A. option allows you to dive into social sciences such as economics, political science or gerontology, among other topics.
Many students find that a bachelor’s degree in psychology is a good foundation for moving into graduate work in a number of fields.
Students have the following curriculum options depending on their degree choices:
- General Program in Psychology (B.A., B.S.)
- Concentration in Community Psychology (B.A., B.S.)
- Concentration in Pre-Medicine (B.S. Only)
The psychology undergraduate program has an active Honors Program and Presidential Assistants Program for exceptional students interested in advanced training in behavioral and psychological research, along with a large Psi Chi club for majors and minors. Applied and research practica are available in a variety of areas for advanced students taking in-person classes at the Atlanta Campus.
