The elementary education bachelor’s degree program prepares teachers to work with children in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. The program reflects research and evidence-based practice in the field of early childhood education, elementary education and teacher education.

We offer two concentrations:

  • Early childhood education (pre-kindergarten through 5th grade) certification
  • Early childhood education (pre-kindergarten through 5th grade) and early childhood special education (pre-kindergarten through 5th grade) dual certification

Our students receive content and pedagogy in all academic disciplines taught in elementary classrooms. There are also opportunities for teacher preparation in English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), as well as in urban education and dual immersion settings.

The program provides integration of the visual, theatrical and musical arts in the context of digital technology. The broad and extensive field-based experiences effectively develop your knowledge and ability to select and implement developmentally appropriate technology, resources and activities for teaching and learning in diverse settings across grade levels.

Education programs leading to professional licensure or certification (nursing, education, social work, counseling, accounting, allied health professions, etc.) may require additional approval from separate licensing boards, depending on the state. This degree requires the following:

Core Curriculum (42 hours) in addition to preparation for the major (18 hours), and major area (60-66 hours).

Some of the courses include Culture, Equity, and Responsive Pedagogy, Preparing Responsive Educators in Classroom Management, and Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment.

Total program: Minimum of 126 semester hours.

Program Financial Information

B.S.E majors must pay all tuition and fees charged by the University and the College. A lab fee of $125 will be charged at the time students register for the student teaching experience. Educator preparation students must be aware that extra cost such as tort liability and transportation will be incurred at various times during the completion of various teacher education field experiences, particularly during the students’ senior year. The cost of the edTPA portfolio submission is $300.00, which will also be associated with student teaching.

Program of study includes:

  • Four semesters of coursework highly integrated with field experiences in Pre-K-5th grades, and special education inclusive settings
  • Three concurrent field experiences organized developmentally across grade levels, opening school experience and opportunities for semi-year-long student teaching
  • Variety of field placements in the metro area, typically in professional development and partnership schools
  • Study-abroad opportunities: China, Sweden, Norway, The Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland to name a few
  • Opportunities for student involvement in collaborative research: (e.g., early childhood education, autism)
