Deaf Studies, Deaf Education Concentration, B.A.

Students are required to meet all university and college admission requirements. In addition, students must:

• Complete Core IMPACTS
• Complete ENGL 1101 and ENGL 1102 each with a grade of “C” or better
• Complete ASL 1001 with a grade of “C” or better and  ASL 1002, ASL 2001 and ASL 2002 each with a grade of “B” or better
• Complete an entrance interview demonstrating at least intermediate conversational proficiency in American Sign Language
• Complete the program application

This degree requires the following:

• Core IMPACTS (42-43 hours) in addition to preparation for the major (18 hours), major area (48 hours) and electives (12 hours)
• Some of the courses include Deaf History and Culture, Foundations of Deaf Education and K-12 Language and Literacy among Deaf Students

Total program: Minimum of 120 semester hours

The mission of the deaf education program is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become a teacher of the deaf in a bilingual/multilingual setting that uses signed languages as a primary instructional language. Our program is committed to the ideals of equity and understanding the diversity of deaf experiences, and creating safe and effective classroom spaces in which deaf children can thrive.
